Landwasser Viadukt
(1144)
If you’re on Instagram you’ll have seen this place before: Landwasser viaduct is one of the best known photo spots in Switzerland. In fact Landwasser is a tiny river near Filisur (see map). From the car park it’s a 15 minutes walk to the famous view above the rails. Trains usually cross the bridge a few minutes before and after the full hour. You may want to check the official timetable between Tiefencastel and Filisur, especially if you want to shoot the one and only Glacier Express at Landwasser.
If you travel by train between Chur and St. Moritz: Make sure to jump on the slightly longer route via Filisur in order to not miss the best views. At Landwasser there are not just one but two great bridges within less than a minute. Coming from St. Moritz, your first window view is the classic snap from Landwasser. The second one is the lesser known Schmittener Tobel-Viadukt less than a minute thereafter. Another great viaduct further down is Wiesner Viaduct just before Wiesen train station.

Brusio is on the Bernina Express route between Pontresina, Engadin, and Tirano, Italy. The circular viaducts and tunnels of Brusio are probably one of the most stunning places among the Swiss Unesco World Heritage Sites. You can shoot the Brusio viaduct from the window, too. Other great views on this route are Ospizio Bernina at Lago Bianco, and Pontresina.
Rheinschlucht (Rhine gorge) is on the Glacier Express route. And it’s not far from the sources of river Rhine. Oberalppass station at 2200 metres above sea level is another unique place (1105).
Train views in Lucerne and Jungfrau regions
Just to mention the most famous ones: If you are near Lucerne, don’t miss the Rigi railway and the unique cog wheel railway to Mount Pilatus (658)
On your way from Interlaken to Jungfraujoch take this train window snap at Wengen, overlooking the Lauterbrunnen valley. Your end point Jungfraujoch, or “Top of Europe” is the highest train station in the world, at 3466 metres above sea level (793)
Finally: Matterhorn goes well with trains, too
Zermatt is the one end point of the Glacier Express which is always good for amazing train selfies. Finally, who wouldn’t want to shoot the Matterhorn out ouf the train window. Our featured picture from the Gornergrat railway is a train window snap taken by Dominique Lags (892).
